Munters invests in its digital DNA

feb 20, 2024

Munters is on a digital transformation journey. Among the tools it uses is generative AI.

There's a lot going on at Munters these days, and they extend beyond orders and acquisitions.

As part of the company's efforts to streamline work processes, the IT department, under the leadership of Kenneth Verlage, is developing a set of digital tools for use in production.

From paper to tablets

Historically, Munters had relied on paper drawings for unit and system assembly, a process that involved employees manually marking completed production steps. This has created inefficiencies and limiting visibility into the manufacturing process.

The company is now replacing paper with tablets, enabling real-time tracking and resource monitoring. The change enables management to gain insight into the time required for assembly and the resources used in each step.

"These digital tools will significantly improve process control on the shop floor and help us identify and manage production bottlenecks," says Verlage.

Generative AI integration is another aspect of Munters' digital transformation. The company has installed machine vision technology in its factory in Tobo, which uses cameras to monitor product quality. The advantage of machine vision is that it can measure the height of components with micrometer precision, and if any irregularity is detected, it immediately alerts the operator. A similar system is used during the block assembly process, further improving product quality and reducing waste.

"The goal is to improve our manufacturing processes with modern tools," says Verlage. "Tools that will improve process control and drive efficiency, simplify operator onboarding and training, and make our company a more attractive place to work."

Digital twin

Verlage and his team are also working with service personnel to identify units in the field and create a digital copy or "digital twin" of the company's installed base in its systems. This is done with a QR code that is placed on all units. When service personal scans the QR code with their mobile or tablet, they will get access to the unit's specifications, including its location and customer details.

"Connecting products to the factory has not only streamlined and improved our service work," he says. "It has also given us new sales opportunities."

A digital ecosystem

The company is keen to expand this digital ecosystem to involve its customers, allowing them to monitor their equipment. In collaboration with a customer in England, Munters has initiated tests of a customer portal, where customers can see information about their machine in real time.

The company has also developed an academy to educate resellers about its products. With the help of a generative AI function, they get answers to their questions, providing easy access to relevant documentation about the products and services it offers.

"With our efforts in the digital domain, we are improving effiency on the shop floor and adding value to our customer," says Verlage. "This is just the beginning of an exciting journey."
