Fire Rated for Safety

Every year, dozens of barn files wreak havoc of farmers large and small. Animal deaths and property damage can cost millions of dollars in damage and can impact the life of agricultural workers. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) estimated that during the period 2013–2017, 326 deadly barn fires occurred.

Using products built with fire retardant materials gives you peace of mind and security. When Munters engineers design equipment, the safety of animals and Ag workers is paramount. As a global supplier of agricultural, industrial and commercial products, Munters requires certifications for our products which are tested and certified to the strictest safety standards.

Testing

Munters utilizes both internal and external product electrical safety testing for quality and safety testing. The test scenarios evaluate adverse conditions, including heat rise testing, extreme over-voltage testing (1,900 V), and insulation system integrity. Testing is repeated with every design, material, and construction change – Motor and Drive Assembly included. Every Munters Drive motor comes with the ETL Safety Agency Approval Marking.

Ratings

Munters Drive is an ETL recognized component (File #4009820) and is rated at UL V-0 for fire retardant capability. Components inside the motor and drive are made with flame retardant materials. They will not burn unless in the presence of open flame from another source and must self-extinguish within 5-seconds. Should an ignition source come into contact with any component of the motor or drive assembly, there is no risk for continued combustion. Furthermore, components of the motor and drive assembly won’t support combustion on their own, even at temperatures in excess of 260°C/500°F.

Additional Resources

Since 2017, more than 3.7 million farm animals in the United States have perished in barn fires, primarily in layer buildings. Although the causes vary, one thing is for sure, these losses are costly – sometimes devastating. Here are some additional resources you can use when it comes to fire prevention in your livestock buildings.

  • Ask your suppliers if fire-retardant products are available. These products prevent the spread of a flame and can be self-extinguishing.
  • Ask about how motors operate in extremely high heat!
Remember, on a Munters Drive, if temperatures exceed 50°C/122°F the motor and drive will coast to a stop and generate an alarm fault.
  • Stay up-to-date with the Fire and Life Safety in Animal Housing Facilities Code published by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) at www.nfpa.org.
