Affugtning – effektiv tøjtørring i daginstitution

The kindergarten Phistergården in Gentofte is an independent institution with approx. 40 children aged 3-6 years. Phistergården is housed in a beautiful old villa and has served as a nursery since 1992.

Drying of children's outerwear was previously carried out in an approx. 20m² large basement room where two drying cabinets were installed. Drying capacity was far from satisfactory. Two drying cabinets did not provide sufficient drying capacity for 40 overalls and footwear, and furthermore the energy consumption for the drying cabinets was very high. A situation close to chaos reigned when the cabinets had to be filled. The staff had to use resources to weed out clothes that can not withstand the high temperature in the drying cabinets (for example outerwear with membranes and GoreTex).

The result was that they were often not even able to dry the clothes from one day to the other, and the complete drying process was a time consuming project wasting time and human resources that could be used for other, better activities.

Drying room replaces drying cabinets

In cooperation with the Municipality of Gentofte, the consultants Force Technology was implementing energy optimization for several day cares, and they suggested Phistergården a Munters dry room solution to replace their drying cabinets.
The room in the basement was a perfect fit for the purpose. In the autumn of 2012, while the wet autumn season began, a Munters desiccant dehumidifier type MH270 and 2 Munters circulation fans were installed. After a wet day outdoor, the children are now called indoor in smaller groups and they all place their wet clothes on a hanger, place on clotheslines under the ceiling by the staff. (Fixed racks will soon replace the lines, making it possible for most of the children themselves to place the hanger).

Easier to use

When all the clothes are hung, the 2 circulation fans located in the ceiling are manually activated by means of a switch. The purpose of the fans is to maximize the movement of air, so the water is released from the clothes to the air fastest possible. Once this is done, the dehumidifier automatically switches on (humidistat controlled) and this effectively removes the water from the air. The absorbed moisture is let from the dehumidifier to the outside as warm, moist air. The fans are in operation within a defined period of time (controlled by a timerbox), and the dehumidifier stops automatically as soon as the clothes are dry. As all outerwear is now thoroughly dry and not just warm, it is a pleasure to dress again, getting ready for another excursion to the playground or the forest.

The power consumption of dehumidifiers and fans in total is approx. 2 kW, ie. not much more than the consumption in a single drying cabinet. As the dehumidifier operation time – as opposed to a drying cabinet – will be 100% demand driven, the kindergarten foresees a hefty saving on drying of clothes. An example of energy savings include eg. Laerke School in Egedal where a Munters drying room replaced 8 drying cabinets and energy consumption was reduced by 85% (Case Study available)

Munters mimics nature

The Munters dry room concept mimics the conditions we know from a dry and breezy summer day, where your laundry outdoors dries in a very short time. Circulating fans mounted in the ceiling, provide a large air velocity over the clothes. This releases water from the clothes enabling the dehumidifier to efficiently remove the water and secure fast clothes drying. A Munters drying room do not require any heating at all as desiccant dehumidification systems work efficiently even at low temperatures. A Munters drying room at approx. 10 m2 (dehumidifier + fans)consume only 1-2 kW. This can replace 8 drying cabinets with a total connected load of between 5-12 kW.

The Danish Defence Construction Service (FBE) has conducted experiments proving Munters drying room concept to have an efficiency of about 1 kWh per liter of water removed, where the traditional drying method with heating and ventilation uses 3-4 kWh per liter of water removed. Over many years already, military staff has enjoyed the benefits of Munters drying rooms. The solution is also used with great satisfaction of both the military special forces and divers, as well as for efficient drying of rescue helicopters equipment.

Today, also many private companies benefit from the concept in employee’s changing rooms, just like a large number of day care centers, as here Phistergården, replacing energy-intensive drying cabinet solutions with Munters drying room concept.
