Munters helps control humidity in Myyrmäki Ice Rink

The Myyrmäki Ice Rink is the main ice rink in West Vantaa, Finland, and has been in use since 1981. In that time, many ice hockey and figure skating greats have trained in the rink, the latest being Stanley Cup winner Valtteri Filppula (Detroit Red Wings 2008).

The key to achieving ideal conditions in the ice rink is maintaining the relative humidity of the indoor air, despite outdoor conditions. The Myyrmäki Ice Rink has suffered problems with humidity for years, especially when outdoor temperatures and humidity levels have been high. High humidity caused mist and created condensation on the Plexiglas used in the rink. This mist thickened the ice and produced condensation on the ceiling. The cold and damp air also created bad training conditions, causing mould and rot in the wooden arena structures, corrosion in steel structures and many other problems.

Munters’ solution for the rink was our MXT7500 energy purge power optimised dehumidifier. Munters dehumidifier is set according to the relative humidity of the indoor air so that humidity levels stay at around 60% RH. The system constantly re-circulates and mixes the air in the ice rink even when there is no need for dehumidification. The ductwork utilises an existing ventilation system which allows the distribution of dry air into different parts of the rink. The system ensures ideal conditions for the users of the ice rink.
