Stable humidity and temperature levels are essential for production processes in pulp and paper mills, printing plants and storage facilities for pulp and paper. Munters provides energy-efficient climate control solutions that improve productivity and protect finished products.
Maintaining the quality and integrity of pulp and paper products is key to profitability. Unfortunately, paper products naturally soak up and absorb moisture from the ambient air. Munters climate control solutions are widely used in the pulp, paper and printing industry to control humidity levels.
Munters also provides VOC abatement, high-temperature, air-to-air energy recovery, and mass transfer solutions to help you enhance process productivity while reducing emissions and your carbon footprint.
Controlling humidity is one of the keys to high and consistent product quality in the pulp, paper and printing industry. Since paper is hygroscopic, it readily absorbs and releases moisture from the ambient air. In the later stages of paper production, keeping humidity levels at about 55% relative humidity is critical. Too little moisture in the air leads to shrinkage, loss of dimensional stability and issues with static electricity. Conversely, too much can alter the paper’s shape, creating trouble during slitting and wrapping.
Warehouses and other areas where handling of finished paper products takes place require lower humidity levels, between 35 and 55% RH, to prevent moisture-related issues.
Temperature is just as important as humidity in printing plants. The indoor climate must not only comply with the requirements placed on printing presses and different paper materials, but also provide a comfortable working environment.
Energy-efficient Munters humidity control solutions keep production and storage conditions stable, improving productivity and minimizing waste. At the same time, they improve working conditions and help lower maintenance costs by preventing mold and corrosion on machinery and other equipment.
Web presses require thousands of cubic feet of air per minute to dry the ink on printed material. Air from the plant is drawn into the press, warmed by electric heaters, and then released outdoors as exhaust air. However, instead of addressing the air deficit with a traditional gas-fired makeup unit, Munters offers solutions that capture much of the energy in the printer exhaust air stream with air-to-air heat exchangers.
Recovering a significant portion of energy from the exhaust air for reuse means the electric heaters of the web press do not have to operate as often. Moreover, gas-fired heaters normally required to maintain plant temperatures can be shut down, reducing gas consumption and maintenance costs. Another benefit: the common problem of negative air pressure is eliminated.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are present in many pulp, paper and printing processes. If not removed, they can cause workplace health issues, damage the surrounding environment and lead to regulatory violation fines.
Munters Zeolite Rotor Concentrator Systems offer the most energy-efficient technology for VOC abatement. We pioneered the development of the hydrophobic zeolite for VOC adsorption. With more than 200 systems in service, our installed base includes some of the world’s most respected companies.
Our VOC abatement systems can achieve more than 95% VOC destruction removal efficiency (DRE) while reducing fuel costs by 30-50% compared to standalone oxidizers. Munters also provides Zeolite Rotor Concentrators for low VOC concentration applications.
To increase energy efficiency further, Munters high-temperature, air-to-air energy recovery solutions can capture and reuse the heat from the VOC incinerators.

Munters mass transfers your problems into solutions. Used for fractionation, absorption and extraction, Munters mass transfer products optimize pressure drop versus output, using the least amount of energy possible. We offer in-house capabilities to design, engineer, manufacture and supply mass transfer products for pulp and paper mills, including:
All packings and internals come in various materials, including stainless steel, duplex, super duplex, monel, hastelloy, alloy 625/825, aluminum, zirconium, titanium, copper and plastics.
Over the years, we have supplied mass transfer solutions to more than 5,000 facilities. These solutions have included column diameters up to 40 ft (approx. 12,000 mm), with structured packing along with associated internals and a variety of single-pass to four-pass trays, including valve, sieve, bubble cap and dual flow.

“What I fell for most of all was the simplicity. It’s an easy-to-use system that requires minimal maintenance. Adding on new units at a later stage is also easy to do."
