Stena Line™ ships remain preserved ready to sail

Stena Line ships HSS Explorer and HSS Voyager utilise Munters dehumidification systems to protect against humidity-related damage during lay-up.

Stena Line is one of the world's leading ferry operators. With a network of ferry routes across Scandinavia, the North Sea, the Irish Sea and Europe, the Stena Line fleet transports millions of passengers each year onboard its’ conventional and high speed (HSS Stena) vessels.

The first of two ships to install a Munters dehumidification system was Stena HSS Explorer, which operates on the Holyhead to Dun Laoghaire in Ireland route. Like many ships, HSS Explorer was scheduled for routine maintenance during the winter months. But unlike many operators, Stena Line recognised that without protection, condensation caused by high humidity could lead to corrosion, electrical failures, dampness, mould, bacterial growth, unpleasant smells and overall deterioration of the ship during this time.

In order to prevent this damage, Munters provided a solution to maintain relative humidity (RH) levels to 50% within the ship. The solution, which comprises of 5 desiccant dehumidifiers from Munters MX and ML series, was carefully designed by Munters engineers to ensure these desired conditions would be maintained throughout the lay-up period. The complex installation ensured that no matter what fluctuations in ambient conditions, the ship was protected and ready to sail.

By maintaining RH levels to 50%, Munters systems ensured that no mould growth, corrosion or deterioration from moisture occurred during the period the ship was laid up. This not only prevented damage to valued assets, it also prevented unnecessary maintenance costs/resources that would so often have been incurred if the ship needed to repair or replace items.

The project onboard HSS Explorer was so successful that Munters has recently completed the installation of a second system onboard Stena HSS Voyager, proving that once again Munters knowledge and experience in climate control continues to demonstrate excellent value for our customers.
