Munters charts new path toward circularity
Aug 17, 2025
On June 25, Munters hosted a webinar in collaboration with Combient Pure to share key lessons so far from its journey toward circularity. The session brought together sustainability leaders, engineers, and service experts to offer practical insights from a year-long transformation programme focused on embedding circular principles across its operations.
A year of learning and action
The circularity development programme, co-led with Combient Pure, was structured around five focused sprints. These covered everything from assessing Munters current circularity status to exploring product design, value chain collaboration, circular business models, and internal alignment. The initiative involved cross-functional teams and external partners like Circular IQ and RISE, ensuring a blend of strategic, technical, and legislative perspectives.
Key insights and achievements
- Current State Analysis: Munters began by mapping its circularity maturity. While strategy and organisational readiness scored high, value chain collaboration emerged as a key area for growth.
- Product-Level Circularity: Using the CTI tool, Munters assessed material flows and identified opportunities for refurbishment and modular design. A pilot scenario showed a 15% increase in material circularity through take-back and refurbishment.
- Value Chain Engagement: Interviews with customers across industries revealed growing interest in circular solutions. Munters recognised the need for stronger supplier collaboration and reverse logistics to support circular flows.
- Circular Business Models: The company explored models like product-as-a-service and rental agreements. These not only extend product life but also align with Munters Scope 3 emission reduction goals.
- Internal Alignment: The final sprint focused on building a company-wide roadmap. Munters committed to integrating circularity into product architecture, enhancing data management, and preparing for CSRD reporting under ESRS E5.
Challenges and opportunities
Speakers acknowledged the difficulty of shifting from a linear to a circular economy, especially in manufacturing. Internal scepticism and limited understanding of embodied carbon were noted as hurdles. However, the programme fostered a shared vision and highlighted circularity’s potential to unlock new markets, improve resilience, and future-proof the business.
Looking ahead
Munters plans to expand circularity efforts across all business areas, deepen supplier engagement, and continue developing scalable circular solutions. As VP of Sustainability Andréa Haag noted, “We’re only at the start of a very exciting journey.”
The webinar concluded with a call to action: “Think big, start small, accelerate.” Munters’ transparent and collaborative approach sets a strong example for other industrial players navigating the shift to a circular economy.
