Providing a comfortable and healthy indoor environment for surgeons, staff and patients can be a constant challenge for hospital owners and facility managers. It is especially important to restrict air movement within and between specific areas such as operating rooms that require unusually low temperatures and low humidity, often below 60% RH, in order to prevent contaminated ductwork, fungal growth and a spread of infections.

Operating rooms require low temperatures of around 60°F/15.5°C to accommodate surgeons who may operate for as long as 14 hours, wearing several layers of protective clothing to guard against infection. Health care administrators now prioritize the provision of comfortable indoor environmental conditions, not just for the safety of the patient, but also to improve the efficiency and quality of work life for the operating staff. The key is to select the most efficient climate control technologies to eliminate wasted expense.

Since hospital applications require cooler temperatures and lower dew points, desiccant technology is an optimal method to achieve operating room conditions and reduce the cost of equipment investment. Munters’ dehumidification systems absorb moisture from the air. This reduces humidity in the process, helping facilities to comply with ASHRAE Standard 62 and 90.1. Munters’ systems incorporate a host of innovative features. The DesiCool product, for example, can use a source of waste heat to provide cooling!

Benefits of Munters’ systems for hospitals:

  • Easy compliance with ASHRAE 62-2001, which cautions against the hazards of infection when relative humidity is too high
  • Cost savings by treating ventilation air economically
  • Elimination of wet floors, saturated duct, mold and mildew
  • Elimination of uncomfortably cold areas
  • Humidity and temperature control is decoupled — supply air is not over-cooled to meet humidity needs

Given the importance of product and service liability in the health care industry, and the tight limits specified by surgical equipment manufacturers, hospitals frequently have to upgrade their existing HVAC systems in order to maintain an appropriate climate. In retrofit situations, Munters’ systems are designed for ease of installation, allowing the work to take place without interrupting surgery schedules.
