An adequately designed ventilation and climate control system will provide the farmer with numerous benefits. To start with it is important to mention that the single highest cost for the pig farmer is the feed to the animals. This consists of 60-70% of the producer costs. Therefore it is of essence that the pigs, especially finishers, can convert the consumed feed into body mass (feed conversion ratio) in the most optimal way. We don’t want the scenario where feed and energy intake is consumed to keep the animal cool or warm it up. But that is not the only reason to have a proper air exchange rate, circulation of air or heating in cold periods. The pigs’ health and welfare also strongly depend on this, as does the health of the staff working in the barn. By keeping the animals in a sound and closed, climate controlled environment and maintaining good bio security measures, there is less need to give the pigs medication, which saves money for the farmer or grower. The environment in the barn comprises box fans, chimney fans or cone fans assuring adequate air quality, air speed, ventilation capacity and air exchange rate to maintain air quality and avoid heat stress. In colder climate zones, minimum ventilation rate is crucial to avoid suffocation of the pigs and ensure a good working environment for farm staff. At times additional heating might be necessary. Correct temperature must be kept in relation to the swine production stages, avoiding temperature swings and maintaining a uniform climate inside the barn. Ammonia emission control can be instrumental in densely populated areas when the farmer wants to be able to expand the farm.
