How Munters shapes the future of data center cooling

Nov 17, 2025

As data centers continue to expand in scale and complexity across the globe, the demand for efficient, sustainable cooling solutions has never been greater. Munters is at the forefront of this transformation, bringing decades of innovation and a deep commitment to sustainability to one of the world’s most energy-intensive industries.

A legacy of efficiency

With over 70 years of experience in energy-efficient technologies, Munters has long prioritized sustainability. “We’ve had sustainability at our core since the start,” Jon Pettitt, Senior Director of Sales at Munters Data Center Technologies, told JCV TV at a recent DCD Connect event in London. “It’s probably nowhere more important than in the data center world, where power and water consumption are critical concerns.”

Munters’ latest cooling technologies consume 30–40% less energy than previous generations, offering data center designers powerful tools to reduce environmental impact. These solutions also enable smarter decisions around site location, power sourcing, and system design—factors that are increasingly central to the future of digital infrastructure.

Innovation that makes a difference

One standout example of Munters’ innovation is the Circlemiser, a high-efficiency cooling solution designed to meet the evolving needs of modern data centers. “We always aim at the most efficient technology,” Craig MacFadyen, Director of Offer Strategy & Portfolio Management at Munters Data Center Technologies, told JCV TV. “Circlemiser uses magnetic bearing compressors optimized for part-load conditions, which is where most data centers operate.”

The system also features cylindrical condensing coils that increase surface area by up to 45%, reducing compressor pressure and energy demand. “It’s a clever design that allows us to push free cooling hours further,” Craig added. “And with cascading evaporators, we reduce energy use even more—by up to a further 12%.”

These innovations are not just about performance. They’re about future-proofing. Circlemiser runs on low-GWP refrigerants, aligning with global sustainability goals and helping data centers meet increasingly stringent environmental standards.

Adapting to a rapidly changing market

The data center industry is evolving rapidly, driven by the rise of AI, high-performance computing (HPC), and new server technologies from companies like NVIDIA and AMD. “We’re seeing a huge shift in the market,” Jon noted. “It’s beholden on us as cooling solution providers to keep up and ideally, to get ahead.”

Munters invests heavily in R&D to stay ahead of these trends. “We want to shape the future of cooling,” Jon said. “That means being ready for whatever comes next, whether it’s air-based systems, liquid cooling, or hybrid solutions.”

Flexibility is key. Munters designs its systems to adapt to unknowns in server configurations and heat loads. “Often, when a data hall is being designed, no one knows exactly what technology will be installed,” Craig explained. “Our systems can shift between air and liquid cooling, depending on what’s needed.”

Building for the future

To meet growing global demand, Munters is expanding its manufacturing footprint. New facilities in Virginia and Cork, along with planned expansions in APAC, reflect the company’s commitment to scaling its impact and supporting customers worldwide.

But perhaps most importantly, Munters is fostering collaboration across the industry. “There’s never been a more important time for manufacturers like us to work closely with technology leaders,” Jon said. “Everyone recognizes the challenge ahead, and we’re proud to be part of the solution.”
