Commercial fire damage help guide

We have tried to answer the most frequently asked questions below. If, however, you have any specific questions about your case, please feel free to consult your project manager or technician.

question How quickly can I be back in business?

This really does depend on the extent of the damage. Your project manager will be able to quickly assess the loss and put together a business recovery plan. With some practical steps you can take yourself and a quick response from us, we can minimise the extent of the damage and speed up the recovery time.

question Do I need to stop business while Munters is on site?

As long as we are aware of any safety issues, we will organise our work to fit around you and your business needs. This means as much as possible, you can continue working.

question What about Health and Safety?

All of our commercial technicians are trained in Health & Safety regulations. They will carry out a risk assessment prior to any work being undertaken at your premises.

question Can the building be successfully cleaned?

Yes, however your technician will carry out test cleans to establish how successful decontamination will be and advise you on next steps.

question What if the building does not fully respond to cleaning?

In some instances, the building surfaces might be stained, and require re-decoration. Decontamination will still be necessary in order to remove acidic residues and contaminates to allow successful re-decoration.

question How will I know if the building has been properly cleaned?

Your technician will conduct a chloride test before decontamination, and again afterwards to ensure that surfaces have been returned back to their pre-incident background levels.

question Why has my machinery and unprotected metal surfaces started to corrode?

Many materials consumed at the time of the fire will mix with extinguishing water and create a hydrochloric acid vapour. This vapour will condense on cooler surfaces (steel) and form a hydrochloric acid solution. This solution is extremely corrosive and will start to corrode ferrous surfaces often within minutes of a fire.

question Can my machinery be saved?

Yes, providing immediate action is taken to arrest the corrosion process, and recovery techniques are implemented without delay.

question Can I use my own labour force to help recover the business?

Some low level cleaning could be carried out by your workforce, however, you should seek advice from your technician first. We would not advise the cleaning of high level surfaces, this is best left to your technician who is trained in safe access and working at heights.

question Could I also then use my workforce to clean down machinery?

Not really. Failure to use correct procedures and chemicals could cause further damage to machinery.

question Should I open the windows and doors?

If a dehumidifier has been installed, you should keep windows and doors shut to prevent any outside moist air from entering the space.

question Why are the dehumidifiers still on when everything looks and feels dry?

Moisture gets trapped inside the walls unless the drying process is completed properly. It is likely that after a short time the moisture will reach the surface and signs of water damage will return if the process is not completed. This can include patches and even mould. Please do not look to re-decorate any water damaged areas until your technician has certified them dry.

question How will I know when the building is completely dry?

Your technician will take regular readings and issue a certificate when the property is dry.
